London-based photographer and set designer, capturing culture and community.
Mathushaa Sagthidas is an award-winning Tamil-British photographer working across portraiture, fashion and documentary. Rooted in people, identity, and lived experience, her practice has led to collaborations with global brands and cultural institutions, including Adidas, Amazon, GUAP, and the Royal Court Theatre. Her work has been exhibited at Tate Britain, Royal Greenwich Museums and The Photographer’s Gallery.
Central to Mathushaa’s practice is a collaborative, community-led approach to portraiture. Influenced by her parents’ experiences of the Sri Lankan Civil War, she explores stories at the intersection of personal and collective histories, creating images that foreground authenticity, emotional depth and representation. Her work invites subjects to be seen on their own terms, challenging stereotypes and dominant narratives.
Her widely recognised series Not Just Brown, Not Just Indian exemplifies this approach through nuanced portrayals of South Asian identity in Britain. Featured in major publications, national billboard campaigns and multiple solo exhibitions, the project has established Mathushaa as a vital voice in contemporary British photography.
